Born around 280 AD to a mother from Lydda \u2014 a town in what is now Palestine \u2014 he was a soldier in the Roman army who died for his faith thousands of miles from the white cliffs of Dover. He never visited England. He almost certainly never existed in the form the legends describe. And the dragon? Really?\n\nEngland adopted him as patron saint in the 14th century \u2014 centuries after his death \u2014 largely because the Crusaders had co-opted his image on their way through the Holy Land. The irony is hard to miss.\n\nSo here it is, in red and white: the St George's Cross, with its origins finally acknowledged. Made in Palestine.
